Mulch Calculator

Estimate mulch volume in cubic yards and bags needed for rectangular or circular beds. Choose bag size and add overage for settling.

Formula

Volume = area × depth. Bags = ceil(cubic feet ÷ bag size). Rounded up.

Assumptions

  • Mulch settles over time — consider adding 5–10% overage.
  • Bag size is user-selected; common sizes are 1, 1.5, 2, and 3 cubic feet.

Limitations

  • Real coverage varies with mulch type, moisture, and bed edges.

Worked example

10 ft × 20 ft bed, 3 in deep

Area = 200 sq ft. Volume = 200 × 0.25 ft = 50 cu ft ≈ 1.85 cu yd.

Frequently asked questions

Why round bag counts up?

It is better to have slightly extra mulch than to run short. Bag counts are always rounded up to the nearest whole bag.
